Naked Raku
Naked Raku is an alternative firing technique where slip and glaze are applied to a bisque fired pot. While the pot is firing in the raku kiln, cracks form along the slip surface. This allows carbon to get to the surface of the pot through the cracks leaving grey to black where the cracks formed. You will learn how to safely remove your pot from the kiln and place it into a reduction can. The hot pot is then placed in water to help the slip fall away from the pot to reveal a beautiful pattern formed from the cracks. Since no glaze stays on the pot at the end, this process is called "naked raku”. Naked Raku pots are decorative only and are not water tight or food safe. We can not run the raku kiln in the rain. Please be sure you can attend the alternate dates if we have to reschedule the workshop due to rain. Alternate rain date: 2/16 or 2/22. Requirements: 1-2 Bisque pots (maximum 6"Wx6"Dx12"H) made from a groggy clay like B-mix with grog or Orion Stout. Burnished pots will yield a more refined finished surface, but is not required.
