Please Read Everything Below So You Are Prepared For This Workshop!

Vasudha will show you how to prepare your pot for mica as well as demonstrating how to apply hair and other combustibles to create unique surface decoration. The best part of this workshop is you get to take your pieces home the same day!

Horsehair Raku: Bring a bisqueware pot free of glaze. We will provide the horsehair.  Pots will be heated in the raku kiln. When ready you will remove your pot and apply horsehair at just the right time. Here is more info on horsehair raku: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/horse-hair-pottery-2745844

Mica Raku:  Bring a bisqueware pot free of glaze. We will provide mica and some combustibles like horsehair and sugar. If you want, you can bring small feathers to place on the pot. Here is a video to get an idea of mica raku: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1siu0uANdMg

Note: Please do not bring your own flammable materials for firing. BHC will provide them.

How to Prepare

ALL pots must be bisque fired PRIOR to the Workshop.

You can make up to 3 decorative pieces using Orion Stout, Bravo Buff, Sculpture Raku, or B-Mix w/Grog clay. Keep in mind the weight of your pots as well. You don’t want it to be heavy so we suggest making them with 4lbs of clay or less. Also make a shape you can easily grab with the kiln tongs - please no large plates. Burnished pots work best with horsehair and mica. Here is an informative video on burnishing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=cNjE7vfzhIo

Note: Raku is NOT food safe and will not hold water. Raku pots are purely decorative.
