Jamie Tells Us About Herself:

It was in high school where I had my first exposure to clay. I took a ceramics class senior year and immediately got hooked into hand building.   Instead of doing the regular projects, the teacher okay’d an alternative project that caught my fancy.  I ended up making a chess set – the pieces plus the board.  Aside from another semester in college learning to throw, I would not come back to ceramics for several years .

When I found my way back, it was through a work colleague who highly suggested BHC.   I started taking classes and became a regular.  Attending BHC became a great antidote for all the stresses of the high tech world.  I learned to make functional pottery on the wheel first  and then expanded into hand building.

When I redid my kitchen I desired to make my own tile for the backsplash.  As I researched this, I became fascinated with architectural ceramics.  In addition to achieving that goal, I also created tiles for my front porch and then sconces for my outdoor lighting in the back yard.  That was just the beginning.

I had picked up the book “architectural ceramics” by Peter King and that taught me to think even bigger.   Thirsty for more knowledge I wanted to take some classes.  I found one in Florida by the author himself and started the enrollment process.  While doing more searches I happened upon www.archetecturalceramics.org . Here was someone doing the same work but just over the hill in Santa Cruz!

Marni Jaime was a former partner of Peter King.  I called to find out if she was offering classes.  She had none at the time.   I then asked if she needed help.  So began my apprenticeship.    I studied with her for over 2 years.  In the process I learned how to create large scale projects.  I worked on floors, sinks, door surrounds, fountains, and fireplaces.

I am continually amazed at what people can do with clay.  It’s exciting to see what unfolds.

Take a look at some of Jamie’s Work!

Jamie’s work will be available at our online store beginning next week.

What I love about Jamie’s work is that it is so inspirational! Just looking at her work gives all of us at the studio so many new ideas. Jamie, herself, is exceedingly helpful to students by providing many unique glazing and throwing methods. Our studio is greatly enhanced by her presence.
